From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Parishioners,

I cannot believe that summer is now upon us! On this very last day of June, we come to a point of the year where many of us can relax and take it easy, at least for a few weeks. I do hope that each of you will be able to enjoy the summer months, whether it be traveling or just staying local, please take advantage of these restful days. It does not mean though that we take a rest from Church. It is our obligation as Catholics to attend Mass every Sunday. If you are traveling abroad and looking for a church for Sunday Mass, www.masstimes.org is a great website to find the nearest Roman Catholic Church to where you are located at the moment. Never take a rest from prayer. Always make time throughout the day to thank the Lord for his many graces and blessings. Our gospel passage today encourages us to follow the Lord. We must never look back at what we have left behind, but to always look forward to where the Lord will lead us. Let us continue as St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading to be guided by the Spirit!

Con-Edison Work at St. Peter Claver Church

You have noticed that Co-Edison began work to replace pipe lines underneath Claver Place and Jefferson Avenue. This work began just about six weeks ago. I must be honest with you that I have been frustrated with the work that has been done there. To begin, Con-Edison did not inform us that they would begin demolishing the street. I know that many of you are frustrated as am I. We have made numerous phone calls of complaint to Con-Edison. We have also spoken to the Buildings Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn which has lead us to consider litigation with Con-Edison. Please be assured that I as Pastor am on top of the situation and will inform all of you of the outcome.

Welcome to our Summer Priests

This summer we welcome back to St. Martin dePorres Parish two familiar faces, Father Joel Cariaso and Father James Yaro. Father Joel, who is from the Philippines, will be with us for the month of July. Father Yaro, who is from Nigeria, will be with us for the month of August. Both of our summer priests are looking forward to being with us here. I thank both Father Joel and Father Yaro for giving Father Kingsley and I an opportunity to take some vacation time this summer.

Summer Mass Schedule

During the months of July and August, there will not be a First Friday 12:00Noon Mass at St. Peter Claver Church. Also during the months of July and August there will not be a Tuesday morning 11:00AM Mass at Holy Rosary Church. Both First Friday Mass and Tuesday morning Mass will resume after Labor Day on September 3rd.

 Have a great week,

Father Alonzo Q. Cox

From the Pastor's Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. As Catholics, we know that the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. Jesus gives of himself, body, blood, soul and divinity for our nourishment. Traditionally on this feast day, many churches have Eucharistic processions throughout the neighborhood, bringing the presence of Christ to all of God’s people. I could remember as a kid growing up watching the priest bring the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets on Corpus Christi Sunday. Non Catholics have no idea of what was going on, but they were still in amazement seeing that something incredible was before their very eyes. We give thanks and praise to God for the gift of the Eucharist. We approach the table of the Lord, knowing that we are unworthy, but only when he says the word, our souls shall be healed.

Cause of Canonization for Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn

This past week, the Diocese of Brooklyn formally sent forward to Rome the documents of testimony for the cause of canonization of Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn, founding pastor of St. Peter Claver Church. The solemn ceremony was held during a Vespers service at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. There were almost 300 people in attendance including parishioners from our parish. Many of you have been asking, what is the next step now? We now wait for the findings of the Congregation for the Saints in Rome. Once they give their approval, Msgr. Quinn would then be titled “venerable”. We continue to pray for his cause, that through his powerful intercession each of us will continue to grow as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Pilgrimage to Germany September 2-12 2020

I would like to invite each of you on a pilgrimage to Germany, specifically the city of Oberammergau. Every 10 years the entire city puts on the Passion Play. In addition we will be visiting the cities of Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Munich. There are flyers with the itinerary and hotel information at each of the three churches.

Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

This Friday, June 28 is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We will have Holy Hour with Eucharistic Adoration beginning at 11:00AM at St. Peter Claver Church, followed by Benediction. Mass will be celebrated at 12:00Noon for the Feast of the Sacred Heart also at St. Peter Claver Church. All are welcomed.

 Ordination Anniversaries

In your kindness, I ask you to pray for both Father Kingsley and I this week as we celebrate our anniversaries of priestly ordination. This Wednesday, June 26, I will celebrate 9 years of priesthood. Father Kingsley will celebrate 4 years of ordination this coming Thursday, June 27. Please pray for us, that Christ the great High Priest will continue to strengthen and guide his holy priests. Please also pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood.

 Have a great week,

Father Alonzo Q. Cox
