Fall is my most favorite time of the year! To see the changing of the leaves, to smell the wood burning chimneys throughout the neighborhood and of course as a big Starbucks fan, to enjoy pumpkin spice lattes, are just some of my favorite aspects of the fall season. Liturgically, we are almost at the end of this liturgical year. As you all know, the liturgical year ends with the Solemnity of Christ the King, which we will celebrate in just 3 weeks’ time. But, before we get to Christ the King, we will celebrate our parish feast day, St. Martin dePorres. His actual feast day on the liturgical calendar is November 3, but we will gather as a parish community next Sunday, November 11 to commemorate our patron. St. Martin dePorres serves as a sign of love and charity in continuing the mission of bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to all of God’s people here in Bedford Stuyvesant. We pray that through the powerful intercession of St. Martin dePorres, each of us will continue to live in the image and likeness of Jesus Christ in all that we say and do. Our gospel passage this weekend reminds us that we must love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our mind and with all our soul. We must also love our neighbor as ourselves. May that love continue to radiate within our parish community now and for ages to come.
All Souls Remembrance
Throughout the month of November, we as a parish community will pray for our dearly departed brothers and sisters. We also pray for those souls in purgatory. Names of our departed loved ones will be placed at the altar during the entire month. There are All Souls envelopes available at each of the three churches. Please use the envelopes and place the names of those you would like remembered on the back of the envelope along with the offering. You may place the envelope in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.
Feast of St. Martin dePorres
We will celebrate the Feast of St. Martin dePorres next Sunday, November 11. As is the custom, only one Mass will be celebrated that Sunday, which will take place at Our Lady of Victory Church at 10:30AM. This year, we will welcome His Excellency, Most Reverend Raymond Chappetto, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Vicar General as the main celebrant and homilist. Immediately after the Mass, there will be a reception in McGuinness Hall. We are asking parishioners to donate any breakfast food items for the reception. You may bring them to the parish office the day before or before the Mass that day. We will pray the novena to St. Martin dePorres, beginning Monday November 4 at all of the weekday Masses leading up to the Feast Day Mass. All are invited.
This Tuesday, November 6 is Election Day. It is important that we exercise our right to vote. We must continue to pray for all of our elected officials, that they will be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Have a great week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
