Last weekend I had the great joy of being on the Kujenga retreat with 75 young boys and girls from the Diocese of Brooklyn. It was a beautiful weekend, filled with excitement, fraternity and God’s abundant grace. Throughout the weekend, I was able to witness the love that these young people have for Christ and his Church. They have pledged to devote themselves to prayer and following the will of God our Father. During Eucharistic Adoration, these young people fell to their knees in prayer, many of them with tears in their eyes, giving thanks to God for the gift of Jesus. Myself and five other priests heard confessions for almost two hours! We are blessed to have talented and gifted young people in the Church, who will one day take on leadership roles. I thank the young people of St. Martin dePorres Parish who attended the retreat along with their chaperones. For the next few weeks, our scripture readings, particularly our gospel passage from St. John, will come from the Bread of Life discourse. Jesus says to us today, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger and whoever believes in me will never thirst”. Jesus is truly the bread of life who gives of himself for us. How blessed we are to be able to receive Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament each Sunday. May Jesus the bread of life continue to be the source of our lives, now and for all eternity.
Summer Outdoor Concert
The music ministry of St. Martin dePorres parish will be sponsoring an outdoor concert entitled, “sure on this shining night”. The concert will take place on Wednesday, August 29 beginning at 7:30PM. It will be held in the courtyard between the church and the rectory. It will feature the internationally acclaimed group Eschoir, a Welsh male choir. Admission is free. Please come and join us for a concert under the stars.
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Next Wednesday, August 15 is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. It is a holy day of obligation. We have changed the Mass schedule for this holy day. Masses will be celebrated at 9:00AM at Holy Rosary Church, 12:00Noon at St. Peter Claver Church and 7:30PM at Our Lady of Victory. Please note that there will not be an 8:00AM Mass at Our Lady of Victory that day.
Annual Catholic Appeal 2018
I take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support and generosity towards this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal for the year is $59,519. As I mentioned, if each of us can participate in some way, we will be able to achieve our goal. As of now we have pledged $18,975 with 64 families participating. Anything that we make over the goal comes directly back to the parish. During the weekend of August 25/26 we will have a special in-pew pledge for those who have not yet given a gift to the ACA. We will welcome Father Patrick Burns, a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn and field director for the Annual Catholic Appeal as the presider and homilist for the masses that weekend. There are extra pledge forms at each of the three churches. Thank you for your support and generosity.
Have a great week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
