I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who were able to be present for the ordination and first Mass of Thanksgiving of Father John Paul Obiaeri. It was a beautiful celebration, filled with joy and love. Many of you who were at the ordination Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph had said to me that this was the first ordination that you have ever attended. Bishop DiMarzio has said on many occasions that the most important role bishops have is ordaining new priests! Father John Paul will serve as Parochial Vicar at Holy Child Jesus Parish in Richmond Hill, Queens. The pastor of the parish happens to be one of the Auxiliary Bishops of the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop Octavio Cisneros. Let us continue to pray for him and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Today we celebrate the great Feast of Pentecost. On this day, we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Our gospel passage today shows Jesus breathing on the Apostles, saying to them “receive the Holy Spirit”. Each of us as witnesses of Christ, are given the gift of the Holy Spirit. We pray that the third person of the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Spirit, will continue to strengthen and guide us to be faithful and holy witnesses. May the Holy Spirit make its dwelling within us, now and forever.
Cause of Canonization of Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn
For almost 10 years, the Diocese of Brooklyn has promoted the cause of canonization of Msgr. Bernard Quinn, the founding pastor of St. Peter Claver Church. The guild for his cause has worked tirelessly in promoting the cause and praying through his intercession. It is with great joy that the testimonies of miracles and other important documents will now be sent to the Congregation for Saints in Rome. To highlight this milestone, a special Vespers service will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 18 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston beginning at 7:00PM. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will preside at Vespers. He has invited parishioners from our parish community to join him. There will be a bus leaving from St. Peter Claver at 5:00PM. Tickets for the bus are $10 per person. To purchase a ticket for the bus transportation please call the rectory to have your name placed on the list.
Father’s Day Remembrance
During the month of June we will remember all fathers, both living and deceased. There are Father’s Day remembrance envelopes at each of the three churches. You are invited to fill out the envelope, put the offering in and place it in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office. The names will be placed on the altars of each of the three churches during the month of June.
Pilgrimage to Germany September 2-12 2020
I would like to invite each of you on a pilgrimage to Germany, specifically the city of Oberammergau. Every 10 years the entire city puts on the Passion Play. In addition we will be visiting the cities of Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Munich. There are flyers with the itinerary and hotel information at each of the three churches.
Have a great week,
Father Alonzo Q. Cox
